The Plywood Chair, originally designed by Charles and Ray Eames during 1945-46, is a classic example of the Eames plywood design talent. Their love affair with ply began in their apartment on Strathmore Avenue in Los Angeles, where they turned their spare bedroom into a workshop and kitted it out with a home-made molding machine, nicknamed 'Kazam!', due to its almost magic ability to turn wood and glue into a plywood molded shape. Interestingly, their first mass-produced plywood product was not an item of furniture, but in fact a leg splint designed for the US army. The profits from this allowed them to obtain a proper workshop and go on to design and make the first Plywood Chair. In Europe, Vitra (the European arm of Herman Miller) still produce this wonderful chair today. We are lucky enough to have a few in stock, which are retailing for £600 each. |
